Water Filtration 101

In our industry, we are investing in improving our customers’ lives and homes. Water filtration is one way we do that. We all rely on water to live. While the United States generally has high water standards, there is still much to be desired in certain parts of the country.

The scary part for a lot of people is the fact that this is something that they just have to trust the government to do. We all know about the problems in Flint, MI when the people thought the water supply was safe when it wasn’t. While this problem is relatively rare, this case alone has gotten a lot of people to start questioning their water safety and start looking for improvements.

Luckily, a water filtration system can go a long way to boost the health, taste, and clarity of your home’s water.

Hard Water: What Is It?

Let’s start with one of the main issues with water in Los Angeles: hard water. A water’s hardness is measured by the number of mineral deposits in it. While minerals like calcium and magnesium are necessary for a healthy body, they cause cloudy water and other problems. While it is safe to drink, it isn’t ideal for a host of other reasons.

To give you some idea of how widespread the problem with hard water in Los Angeles is, let’s compare the typical levels of water hardness to other cities. In LA, we see an average hardness of 127 parts per million, while San Francisco sees average levels 70% lower at 47 parts per million. This is a problem that we have to deal with specifically in Los Angeles because hard water is so much more widespread here.

Why Is Hard Water a Problem?

We already mentioned that hard water is safe to drink, but let’s clarify some of the negative side effects so you have an idea of what we’re up against. All of those small bits of mineral deposits in hard water cause issues with cleaning. For your skin and hair, hard water can dry you out. Those same small specks of minerals can cause problems with your laundry too. Your clothes will lose their brightness and bounce much sooner if you wash them with hard water.

What Can Water Filteration Do For You?

Water filtration does more than correct for hard water. There are a whole host of benefits for your home that a water filtration system can help with. The type of installation you get will determine how much you are able to fix.

  1. Whole-Home: A whole-home system is one of the two main types of water filters. These systems can cover your entire home and are typically more focused on eliminating problems with hard water. These units can filter out mineral deposits before they enter your home’s plumbing system at all. Not only does it help with cutting down on problems like sin dryness and laundry problems, but it can also increase the lifespan of your pipes if they don’t have to deal with mineral deposits.

  2. Under-The-Counter: An under-the-counter system is much more focused. These are installed under the counter of the sink you typically get your drinking water at. They are smaller in scope but can be even more powerful than a whole-home system because of that.

There are a variety of different options and levels of power available for you to choose from. Ultimately, any system will increase the clarity, taste, and safety of your drinking water, so what’s not to love!
